Title: Not in the right environment to innovate and commercialize your research ? MOVE ! I did and now my breakthroughs are in 30,000+ patients !
Without a doubt, recent advances in materials have revolutionized numerous industries over the past half of century, including my area of research which includes our ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases. But, how did this occur ? Was your research part of these advancements ? Have we innovated and commercialized enough ? While some of these wonderful research advances have made it to the market helping real people, many have not. Are we doing enough to translate materials research into real products ? Are companies not paying attention to this wonderful research ? Are Universities not doing enough to help you ? Is your research being licensed to larger companies to make products that help society? Are you starting new companies ? What about federal funding agencies ? Are they supporting your commercialization efforts ? And, most importantly, are you in the right environment to innovate and commercialize your research ?
Well in my own experience, above all else, it takes a supportive environment. We all have great ideas. But, it takes more than that. It takes a supportive community to translate lab research into commercial products. It takes determination and fortitude to see it through. You need to surround yourself with the right people – and if you are currently not around a supportive optimistic environment, leave ! Leave that negative, ultra-competitive University you are at - I did ! Leave that University that takes over 70% in indirect costs that doesn’t help your research ! Leave that company that is stifling your advances. Start your own company ! Attend the right conferences, not those super competitive conferences where the same old people give the same old talks, and put your work down just to support their own !
I left a University I worked at 4 years ago and I found a truly supportive environment that helped me succeed. Only then was I able to start numerous companies and commercialize my research into medical devices now in over 30,000 patients with no failures, only success ! No infection ! No chronic inflammation ! No implant loosening ! No failures ! Period ! Once I found the right environment, everything else moved very quickly – including FDA approval and my research advances in patients in just 4 years !
So, I encourage everyone to find that right environment. Attend the right conferences: the World Meet on Materials 2025 (WMMaterials 2025) conference at the heart of innovation and commercialization ! Meet the right people ! Be energized by optimistic people ! It will change your life once you make the commitment to surround yourself with positive people. I know, because I lived it.

The group performs advanced theoretical and computational research in the areas of mesoscale plasticity and dislocation dynamics, hydrogen effects in metals, radiation effects in materials, microstructure evolution, phase field method development, phonon and electron thermal transport in crystalline solids, and computational methods for materials science and mechanics. The ideal applicant should have MS in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or materials science and engineering, with some experience (graduate course and/or research) in microstructure science, elasticity, defects in crystalline solids, numerical methods, computational techniques such as finite element method, and an advanced programming language, e.g., Fortran or C++ or both. Biography
Thomas J. Webster’s (H index: 129) degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995; USA) and in biomedical engineering from RPI (Ph.D., 2000; USA). He has formed over a dozen companies who have numerous FDA approved medical products currently improving human health in over 30,000 patients. His technology is also being used in commercial products to improve sustainability and renewable energy. He is currently helping those companies and serves as a professor at Brown University, Saveetha University, Hebei University of Technology, UFPI, and others. Dr. Webster has numerous awards including: 2020, World Top 2% Scientist by Citations (PLOS); 2020, SCOPUS Highly Cited Research (Top 1% Materials Science and Mixed Fields); 2021, Clarivate Top 0.1% Most Influential Researchers (Pharmacology and Toxicology); 2022, Best Materials Science Scientist by Citations (Research.com); and is a fellow of over 8 societies. Prof. Webster is a former President of the U.S. Society for Biomaterials and has over 1,350 publications to his credit with over 55,000 citations. He was recently nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Webster also recently formed a fund to support Nigerian student research opportunities in the U.S.

Prof. Tamotsu Takahashi obtained Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo graduate school in 1983. And then he became Assistant Professor at engineering department of the University of Tokyo. He was promoted to Associate Professor at Institute for Molecular Science in Okazaki in 1991. He moved to Hokkaido University in 1995 as a full professor. He retired in 2020 and now emeritus Professor of Hokkaido University. In 2024, he became President of Foundation for Interaction in Science & Technology, Japan.

Biography
Prof. Blaž Likozar is a head of the Department of Catalysis and Chemical Reaction Engineering at the National Institute of Chemistry (NIC), leading the programme “Chemical Reaction Engineering”, as well as numerous research projects (15 H2020 / 50 in Horizon Europe alone). His expertise lies (among others) in heterogeneous catalysis materials, modelling, simulation, and optimization of process fluid mechanics, transport phenomena and chemical kinetics. He worked at the University of Delaware in 2014–2015 as a Fulbright Program researcher. He has authored >400 articles, was cited >10,000 times, having an h-index of 61. He is also involved in many industrial projects, amongst others, with TotalEnergies, Evonik Industries, UPM, Novartis, Carbon Recycling International. He is a recipient of Pregl and Zois awards.

Dr. Run-Zi Wang is currently an Assistant Professor at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR), Tohoku University, Japan. He received his Doctorate in Engineering from East China University of Science and Technology in 2019. He has been recognized as one of the world’s top 2% most influential scientists (Stanford University/Elsevier). Dr. Wang has published over 100 high-impact journal articles in leading international journals such as Reliab Eng Syst Saf, Int J Plast，Acta Mater. He holds more than 20 granted invention patents and over 10 registered software copyrights, and has led the drafting of 4 national standards. According to Web of Science, he ranks first globally in both publication output and citation count among researchers under the age of 40 in his field over the past decade. His research lies at the forefront of interdisciplinary innovation, spanning from modelling-driven material strength analysis to informatics-reinforced structural integrity assessment. His work integrates experimental mechanics, material characterization, theoretical modeling, and software development to advance precision life design methodologies. His recent focus centers on active damage mitigation through multiscale mechanics to enhance the creep-fatigue life of critical structural components. Dr. Wang also founded the Pan-Asia Youth Collaborative Academic Team on Lifetime and Reliability (PYCAT), which aims to foster academic collaboration and mutual support among emerging researchers across Japan, China, Singapore, South Korea, and other regions.

Ping Liu is a professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering and the Institute of Materials Science in South China University of Technology (SCUT). He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Sun Yat-sen University in 1986 and 1991, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Materials chemistry from Osaka University in Japan in 2000. He joined the Institute of Materials Science, South China University of Technology (SCUT) in 1991, and became a full professor in 2005. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Fathy Mubarak is a distinguished professor in the Applied Petrochemicals Department, Faculty of Science, Mansoura University, and a senior researcher at the Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry (2018), an M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry (2014), and a B.Sc. in Chemistry (2009). With over 14 years of research experience, he has contributed to more than 101 international publications, 9 books/book chapters, and 10 national STDF projects in water treatment, nanotechnology, and petroleum applications. Dr. Mohammad Owais initiated his distinguished academic trajectory by attaining a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nanoscience & Technology from the Preston Institute of Nanoscience and Technology, Preston University, Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2014. Subsequently, he advanced his qualifications by securing a Master of Engineering in Nanoscience & Technology in 2018 from the prestigious National Center of Nanoscience and Technology (NCSNT), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), Beijing, China. His academic pursuits culminated in the conferral of a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering in 2023 from the Center for Materials Technologies at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Moscow, Russia. His doctoral dissertation, "Material Design and Optimization of Thermal Management Materials Based on Boron Nitride, Graphene, and Carbon Nanotubes Polymer Nanocomposites," is a testament to his profound expertise within this specialised domain.
Presently, Dr. Owais leverages his specialised knowledge as a Junior Scientist within the Thermal Energy Storage Department at the Iberian Centre for Research in Energy Storage (CIIAE) / Centro Ibérico de Investigación en Almacenamiento Energético (CIIAE). His current research endeavours are principally directed towards the synthesis of flexible, biodegradable solid-liquid phase change material (PCM) composites, meticulously designed for the thermal management of lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, his investigative scope extends to the thermal energy storage capabilities of bio-based flexible PCMs films and the strategic application of natural oils (both edible and non-edible) as effective PCMs for a diverse array of thermal energy storage-based applications. Dr. Owais's extensive academic and professional engagements across diverse international settings have endowed him with a rich multicultural perspective and a global scientific outlook.¨

He is a member of the Big Data and Science and Technology Communication Professional Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology, a member of the Organizing Committee of the 2020 International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Intelligent Manufacturing, and a specially appointed expert of the Chemical and New Materials Expert Committee of the China Bo Lian Think Tank. He has won the "Excellence Award of the Jilin City Science and Technology Workers Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition" and the third-level honors of " East Electric Power Scholar". He is an excellent teacher of classroom quality at Northeast Electric Power University. He is a member of the Organizing Committee of the AEIC Materials Series International Conference, an expert in the expert database of the Jilin Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and a reviewer of internationally renowned academic journals such as International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology , Journal of Materials Research and Technology , and Materials .
